Calling to protect access to Parliament
Whilst Parliament has been in recess this week and I’ve been back home, my team has had the pleasure of welcoming Sarah, Richard and William from Yealmpton, Lily and David from Newton Ferrers, and the Wooldridge family from Plympton for tours of Parliament.
It’s always wonderful to see residents from South West Devon exploring this historic building and learning more about its history, architecture and its role in shaping the country.
But here’s the issue.
Some of the restoration proposals currently being put forward in Parliament could see the building vacated for decades - potentially until I’m in my 90s! That would mean tours like these simply wouldn’t be available for a generation.
Of course, the building needs essential repairs. Fire safety, structural work and critical systems must be addressed. But the current plans risk going far beyond that, with eye-watering costs and timelines that could lock the public out for years.
That’s why the Conservatives are calling for a fundamental rethink - focusing on essential works, keeping costs under control, and making sure the public can continue to visit the mother of all Parliaments.
