I have been following progress on Labour's local government reorganisation closely. Thank you to everyone who has responded to my survey. More than 500 concerned local residents have shared their views with me. It’s not too late to let me know your thoughts https://www.rebecca-smith.org.uk/.../share-your-views...
The Government wish to create simpler council structures with a pattern of single tier unitary authorities across the country. They have clarified that each council can submit a single proposal. In Devon, six interim plans have been submitted providing a range of options.
Plymouth City Council had a head start in their consultation process as they did not have local elections in May. They have been active across the 13 parishes they are keen to adopt in the South Hams. You can find out more here https://www.plymouth.gov.uk/local-government...
South Hams District Council has rejected Plymouth City Council's plans to expand into South Hams and have put together their own proposal. Their 1-4-5 plan proposes the following:
1. Retain Plymouth unitary authority on its existing boundary
4. Create a unitary authority combining the South Hams, Teignbridge and West Devon areas with Torbay
5. Create a unitary authority including East Devon, Mid Devon, North Devon, Torridge and Exeter
South Hams are also hosting consultations on their plans which you can view here https://www.southhams.gov.uk/.../local-government...
I will share other options as their consultations go live.
My primary concern is that my constituents' views are given the consideration they deserve. It is vital that the local character of our community is retained and that robust business cases are shared in due course. You will not get a vote on the changes. I will share the views I have received with Ministers in due course to ensure your voice is heard.
I will share any further progress on local government reorganisation. Please get in touch with me by email if you have any specific questions - [email protected]
