Many of you have been asking for an update on the situation at Mount Batten.
The latest air quality testing has found no evidence of airborne asbestos around the Mount Batten peninsula, which is reassuring for residents, businesses and visitors.
Further testing of sand samples is still ongoing, and some areas of the beach and foreshore remain closed as a precaution whilst specialists complete their work. A specialist environmental asbestos company has also been brought in to identify the source of the asbestos and advise on the next steps. I’m told this work may take some time, as there are only a limited number of specialists able to carry out this work.
I completely understand the frustration this has caused for residents and local businesses. I was shocked at the extent of the fencing around the beach when I visited yesterday. However, please be assured that I will remain in contact with the Council and update you as and when I hear anything further.
It was also good to bump into June from The Galley Kitchen, who was keen to stress that they’re very much open for business and that parking at Mount Batten remains free. It’s a good reminder that the fantastic businesses around Mount Batten are still open and would really appreciate your support. If you’re able to visit, whether for a coffee, lunch or one of the many activities on offer, it will make a real difference to the businesses in the area whilst this situation is being resolved.
