Behind the scenes at Princess Yachts
It was great to visit Princess Yachts at Langage earlier today and see the incredible work that goes into building their yachts here in Plymouth.
The team builds four different models at the Langage site, ranging from 55ft to 65ft, with a boat coming off the production line around every eight days. It was brilliant to see first-hand the skill and attention to detail that goes into each one.
It was also fantastic to speak with Damien, Max, and third-year apprentice Leo about the many different routes into the industry. From long-serving members of the team, to apprentices learning their trade at Princess and those who trained elsewhere before joining, there is a huge amount of skill and experience across the team.
We also discussed concerns around the Government’s Employment Rights Act. The changes mean businesses like Princess have to rethink how it trains and assesses new starters, with a process that would normally take longer now being compressed into around five months. For highly skilled roles, that makes it much harder to give new starters the time they need to properly learn the job.
