Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with Trevor, the owner of Trevor Denford Transport in Plympton to discuss the growing pressures the haulage industry is facing.
During our meeting we discussed the rising rate of freight crime, the Government’s decision to cut funding for the strategic road network and the closure of the Truck Driver Welfare Grant to new applications. Introduced in 2022, this scheme funded vital improvements to driver facilities, from secure parking to welfare support.
According to police figures, goods worth at least £111 million were stolen from lorries in 2024, a 63% rise on the previous year. I will be pressing the Government to take action so that the livelihoods and safety of HGV drivers are properly protected.
