It was a privilege to meet a delegation of Ukrainian religious leaders during their visit to London recently.
Representing around 80% of faith communities in Ukraine, they shared powerful and deeply moving testimony about the reality facing people in Russian-occupied territories.
I heard harrowing accounts of pastors and faith leaders being arrested, tortured, and even killed for refusing to comply with Russian authorities, as well as the systematic denial of freedom of religion.
They also highlighted the devastating impact of hybrid warfare, including the precision targeting of churches and places of worship. More than 700 religious sites across Ukraine have now been partially or completely destroyed since Russia’s illegal invasion over 4 years ago.
I am grateful for their courage in sharing these stories. The UK must continue to stand firmly with Ukraine, not just its sovereignty, but the people and communities defending these freedoms every day.
