It was brilliant to speak at the Women in Parliament APPG event on Championing Women in Rural Areas last week. This event, organised by Centenary Action, brought together women from across the political spectrum to explore how we can better support women living and leading in rural communities.
We discussed the real challenges women in rural areas face, from limited public transport and isolation to the confidence gap that often holds back great potential. It was also great to hear how many women are already making a difference - running businesses, working on farms and leading quietly in their communities.
As an MP, I see every day how important it is to have diverse voices in our politics, especially voices rooted in rural life. Whether it’s housing, SEND provision, health services, or the strength of our local economies, I believe that national policy must reflect every part of the country including in South West Devon.
Organisations like 50:50 Parliament, Elect Her, and the Conservative Women's Organisation provide excellent support, training, and guidance for anyone considering standing for office. If you’ve ever thought about standing, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me too! I’m always happy to offer advice and support along the way!
