Standing with our Coastguard Rescue Officers
It was a pleasure to join members of our local Coastguard Rescue teams this evening as we walked across the Tamar Bridge in support of the vital work that they do.
For years, Coastguards have received a small payment for each call out they make - completely fitting to their role as the fourth emergency service. Recently this was called into question but after much campaigning the government have pressed pause on scrapping their payments. Whilst this is welcome, a pause is not the same as cancelling the plans altogether. There is still more to do, and we must keep working to ensure a long-term solution is found.
It was also great to catch up with Lee and Gillian from Plymstock, as well as Pip and Lucy from the South Devon Coastguard team, who I first met when they visited Parliament a few weeks ago.
Thank you all for everything you do to keep people safe along our coastline and I will continue to campaign for a lasting solution.
