Could first jobs be taken off the menu?
It was great to meet James at the McDonald's on Billacombe Road to discuss the Government’s employment reforms and what they could mean for youth employment in hospitality.
My own first job was sweeping the floor at a florist and, if I was lucky, being trusted to bundle up a few flowers. It certainly wasn’t always glamorous, but it taught me a lot and gave me the confidence that comes with earning your own money. For many young people, McDonald’s offers exactly that same first step.
The Government’s own analysis suggests its new employment rules could cost businesses as much as £2.9 billion a year, with hospitality and retail likely to be particularly affected. If the rules become too costly or complicated, businesses may offer fewer flexible roles. Staff should be treated fairly, but we must make sure new employment rules don’t make it harder or more expensive for businesses to give young people their first chance. I will be looking to raise this in Parliament after the summer recess.
